blood[claat] - written and performed by d'bi.young.anitafrika, directed by weyni mengesha
MAI (Montreal, arts interculturels) 3680 Jeanne-Mance

blood[claat] is a Dora Award winning coming of age story of 15-year-old Mudgu Sankofa, set in modern day Kingston, Jamaica. Described by eye weekly as "a meditation on the many contexts and connotations of blood—menstruation, murder, sacrifice, ancestry, salvation, childbirth," blood[claat] is the story of "womban" and blood as experienced through the eyes of a young girl. As Mudgu comes to terms with gender, class, race and sexuality through her evolving relationship with her own blood, the inevitable nature of cycles comes to symbolize resistance to colonial oppression, ceremonial dance, liberashun chant and dub poetry.
