Whatever happened to the Leisure Society?

In the mid-20th century, the promise of new computer technology and skyrocketing productivity led many academics to predict that by the year 2000, we would have a 20-hour workweek and too much recreation time on our hands. Instead, in a cruel irony, leisure time is shrinking and work hours are expanding. Ted Yudelson addresses this reality in his mixed media collage series “BROKEN PROMISES” which shows computers in a whole new light.

After the war with Hannelore - A Berliner war child’s testimony 1945-1982

This collection of photos was taken on location in Berlin in September of 2006, during the shooting of my documentary After the war with Hannelore. Some of these shots will be used in the final film as stills, or animated in the seven vignettes about Hannelore’s life in Berlin. I have chosen to exhibit these stills as they are key icons and signposts I used when storyboarding the film.

The CD-format magazine NO DAMN GOOD Art, Music and Tomfoolery from NDG is launching its third edition on Thursday, September 6th at 7:00 PM at Les Enfants du Quartier (corner Marcil and Sherbrooke Sts.). The launch is free to attend and copies of the CD will be available for the incredible, low price of $5.

There will be readings by Grace Moore, Terri Leckner, Alex Haber and music by Mike Phelan, William McNally, Maica Mia, Sarah Mangle and others.

Rebecca Mason The Stillness of Perception at Galerie McKenzie Marcotte

As a canoeist and environmental activist, Rebecca has come to know the Canadian landscape intimately. In the watercolour paintings in The Stillness of Perception her attachment to the landscape, particularly to its lakes and rivers, shines through.

Evoking a hypnotic and apocalyptic image, the video installation Exiles of the Shattered Star suggests that the world might end in silence, not with a bang but with a whisper.

We'll be serving fresh St-Viateur bagels, hot coffee and cold juice from 11am to 1pm on Sunday Sept. 9th, 2007. Get to know the core Infinite staff as well talk with the actors, designers and crew working on the Infinitheatre Season Opener, THAT WOMAN, by Daniel Danis (translated by Linda Gaboriau). Set in an imagined rural Québec community, it is the story of the Mother, the Old Man who lives upstairs and their Son. In a series of twenty-four snapshots, That Woman transports the audience into an existence painted by memory, repressed desire, and small victories along life's path. The Talisman Theatre production of That Woman was an immediate sell-out during its all-too brief run last fall. This remount will permit a wider audience to catch it this time.

Newcomers to the local scene, the members of Banjo Consorsium bring a uniquely distinctive sound. Charles-Antoine Gosselin, Jacques-Philippe Lemieux-Leblanc, Vincent Vachon, and Gabriel Lemieux-Maillé join instigator Jacques-Philippe Lemieux-Leblanc and band together to create music that is pure, ethereal yet solid. A self-taught multi instrumentalist, Lemieux-Leblanc describes the band’s style as neo-folk or folktronic. Together, the group has concocted a sound that has been heard around the planet through the channels of the Internet. Folk and electronic music lovers from Sherbrooke and the world have tasted the quintet’s enthralling sound. “A refreshing discovery” according to VoirEstrie editor, Elise Giguère.

Set in an imagined rural Québec community, “That Woman” is the story of the MOTHER, the OLD MAN upstairs, and their SON. Each of the three struggles to experience brief moments of happiness in a life of small-town morality, repressed desire, and small victories along life’s trajectory of pain.

Daniel Danis won the 1993 Governor General Award for “Celle-Là.” Translated by Linda Gaboriau, the production was hailed by critics and was an immediate sell-out during its brief run last fall.

From the Charles Perrault fairy tale Peau d’âne, Valérie Lamontagne draws on the theme of three fabulous dresses: one made out of a moonbeam, one as warm and bright as the sun above and one cut out of the sky itself. Using innovative technology and working with experienced collaborators, she has created three interactive dresses that react in real time to atmospheric variations transmitted by a weather system installed on OBORO’s roof.

Rue Berri is a performance in public space combined with an interactive video installation in OBORO’s gallery space.

A custom-made camera dolly is outfitted with video and position recording equipment. During the multi day performance Stephan Schulz, pushes this out-of-place “new media object” up and down the street in order to explore, interact and record the people and activities in this particular space and time.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY: Nigel Spencer will be speaking on the unusual and varied questions of translating the underground classic Ayyaz and the Seasons in Hell by Iranian exile Reza Baraheni--sponsored by the Concordia U. French Dept.
