Art is Oxygen and A Brave New World : painting and photography exhibit by Nicole Béland at Luz Gallery
Luz gallery, Belgo building, 372W, Sainte-Catherine street, Montreal, space 418 open from Wednesday to Saturday from 12h00 to 17h00.
Art is Oxygen : What a catchy title! But as all catchy titles go : it's a lie. Art is not Oxygen but it is important to me. Some artists have this big persona they hide behind. I'm trying to be the genuine article here. Hope you can witness it with me as I showcase some of my best work that will soon be published in my first art book about personal mythology, symbolism and ego construction. All that Freudian stuff is what great works of art are made of.Of course, if you can make people laugh, that works too.

Parkdale Gallery Exhibition: Referencing the Future
229 Armstrong Street, Ottawa, Ontario.K1Y 2W5
Featured Artist: Iaian Greenson
Iaian's large canvases depict our interactions with trivial pop culture miscellany, television heroes, and everyday objects. Iaian avoids the kind of polite and passive intellectualism that bogs down some Canadian art. His work goes for the heart, the ass, and the eye. Like a musician, Iaian uses color as reverb, and his palette is Matisse's. His surface imagery is carefully randomized like Basquiat.

In “Undercurrents”, the first exhibition of the season at Galerie McKenzie Marcotte in Wakefield, Shawn McNevin presents lyrical, meditative paintings of the Gros Morne area of Newfoundland. The paintings, whether they are distant images of land forms lost in the vastness of the sky and sea, intimate observations of a particular tree or the sky at twilight, all reveal the undercurrent of an encounter with solitude, of transcendence and of awe.

Undercurrents: Paintings by Shawn McNevin at Galerie McKenzie Marcotte
Galerie McKenzie Marcotte 26 chemin Sully Wakefield Qc J0X 3G0
Shawn McNevin's paintings in “Undercurrents”, whether they are distant images of land forms lost in the vastness of the sky and sea off the west coast of Newfoundland, intimate observations of a particular tree or the sky at twilight, all reveal this artist’s moods and perceptions. There is indeed the undercurrent of an encounter with solitude, of transcendence and of awe that Shawn has experienced in rural Newfoundland.

Forest and Lake: Losing Eden, exhibition of paintings by Susan Lee and sculptures and paintings by Sheila Watson
441, rue de la Cour, Waterloo, Qc J0E 2N0
Lee and Watson's work have several things in common. The primary similarity lies in their approaches. They are both inspired by the nature near to them; forest for Sheila, lake for Susan. Environmental issues concern them deeply and reaching people with these concerns, while creating aesthetically pleasing work, is important to both.
Through their current creations Lee and Watson convey a sense of loss for the flora and fauna of their surroundings, while expressing their concerns for the fate of the environment, and their love and admiration of nature.

COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET is a festival dedicated to secret talents that are ready to be unveiled. The festival is founded by established actor Carlo Alacchi, who, upon opening a closet at his mother’s house, discovered 20 years worth of paintings, scripts, music, film, and his dance shoes; he decided to create a festival for others like himself.
The festival encompasses five different events.
Opening closets for reasons other than sexuality, this festival aims to bring Montrealers closer to their neighbours and community by giving individuals an opportunity to share their hidden talents and interests with others.

Paris, end of the 19th century: an idealistic baroness decides to socialize a savage child to replace her last maid. The baroness lives through photographs of her experiences, while the pig has never even seen her reflexion in a mirror. It is 1983. Joe a middle-aged lesbian meets Iva, a 20-something male transvestite who wants to become a trangender. What beholds this inverted couple is normality, frolic and madness.
As times change, so do our roles as men and women. HESHE is a play that explores the stereotypical role models of both genders while emphasizing the loving, caring nature of human beings which transgresses all differences.

John Barton, Wayde Compton & Nathalie Stephens will be reading Thursday, May 15, 7pm.
Victoria editor and poet, John Barton, has published eight books. His work is often gay-themed, dealing with issues of intimacy, social history and memory.
Performer and sound poet, Wayde Compton, co-founded Hogan’s Alley Memorial Project in 2002 to collect and document the oral histories of elder black Vancouverites.
Nathalie Stephens (Nathanaël) writes l'entre-genre in English and French, and her recent work has striven toward an ethics of correspondence through a dismantling of the body's relationship to the notion of place, the body's own damningly elusive "where".

Parkdale Gallery Exhibition: The Barbie Show
229 Armstrong Street, Ottawa,
Featured Artist: Laura Lynn Eggleston
Vernissage, May 24th, 7 to 9 p.m.
The Barbie Show explores iconic Barbie. On a light and humorous note there is a series of famous paintings with Barbie doll heads. Less comforting abstract works based on the Barbie body types ask what our social messages are to young girls in terms of body image. The third part of the show uses Barbie as a metaphor for a plastic and shallow society.
