Quebec-Ontario and Quebec-New Brunswick Artist-in-Residence Program

Quebec artists and writers may apply for a grant of up to $9 000 to engage in a period of residence in either Ontario or New Brunswick in order to carry out an artistic or professional enrichment project.

As part of its contribution to the initiative launched by the Québec government in 2006 to develop ongoing arts and culture exchanges between Québec, Ontario and New Brunswick, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec recently concluded reciprocity agreements with the Ontario Arts Council and the New Brunswick Arts Board.

The agreements establish an annual exchange program that provides professional artists and writers with opportunities for creation and professional development residencies in a participating province. Artists and writers participating in this program enjoy complete autonomy and define the objectives of their period of residence and elaborate the parameters and conditions governing its realization in collaboration with an arts or community organization in the territory where the period of residence is to take place.

The agreements reflect the desire of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec hopes to offer Québec writers and artists a new career development opportunity and to continue its productive collaboration with the arts councils of neighbouring provinces.

Among the program's aims are the following:

  • encourage artists and writers to develop their skills by giving them access to a stimulating new cultural environment;
  • promote the exchange of artistic views and contribute to the establishment of lasting ties between writers and artists in Québec, Ontario and New Brunswick;
  • strengthen ties between creators and communities;
  • identify new artistic creation, production and presentation networks.
  • Eligibility

    The program is for professional artists in the following disciplines: visual arts, arts and crafts, media arts, circus arts, architectural research, multidisciplinary arts, literature and storytelling, music, theatre and dance.

    Applicants must submit at the time of registration a letter of intent from the host organization in which the latter undertakes to offer professional support during the period of residence and that specifies the nature of the collaboration that the organization intends to establish in conjunction with the project.

    Candidates must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and must have lived in Québec for at least the last 12 months.

    They must be eligible for the grant programs of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, which means that they must have been in professional practice for at least two years and have presented works of art in a recognized professional setting.

    Artists or writers groups are not eligible for this program.
