Director's Message
July was a rainy month but it didn't stop people from enjoying summer and the many festivals. I took a little holiday from ELAN to spend 10 days working on the Jazz Festival. The actual work consisted of interviewing artists whose concerts were filmed for television, and writing some scripts for the final packaging. The work is always enjoyable, but the part of the contract that brings me back year after year is a gold pass providing access to all the ticketed concerts. This year I managed to catch sets from 91 shows in ten days. By the final Saturday night I was close to audio overdose and was starting to turn my mind back to ELAN business. Suddenly I realized the closing night of the Jazz Festival was a de facto showcase of Anglo-Quebecois artists.
The evening started with the Chet Doxas Quartet. Chet and his brother Jim are extremely talented young players who are well known around town at jazz venues like The House of Jazz, Upstairs, Bistro Duluth and Casa del Popolo. They performed to an enthusiastic crowd at the Gésu. From there I went to the Maisonneuve Theatre at Place des Arts to see local legends Vic Vogel and the Bob Harrison Blues Band backing Martin Deschamps and some of his friends. Next I went to the Cinquième Salle to see the 13-year-old phenomenon Nikki Yanovsky who packed the house for four consecutive nights singing a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Then I went across to Salle Wilfrid Pelletier to see another local legend Oliver Jones (Oscar Peterson's sister Daisy was Oliver's first piano teacher). Next stop was Upstairs to see jazz diva Ranee Lee perform with her excellent quintet. The final stop was back to Wilfrid Pelletier to see the feature concert of the Festival's closing night, which was none other than ELAN president Susie Arioli, singing on the same stage that Bob Dylan and Van Morrison had rocked earlier in the week. I was proud to see Susie put on a superb show backed by Jordan Officer and Michael Jerome Brown. The I Musici string ensemble joined them for the final half of the concert. Initially it seemed a missed opportunity that no one in the media had noticed the profusion of local Anglo talent starring on so many stages the same night. But the fact that no one thought it noteworthy demonstrated that the Montreal music scene has outgrown old fashioned linguistic pigeonholes. That was as worthy of celebration as the music.
As I informed you last month, I am stepping down as ELAN's Executive Director because the job has become too demanding to continue on a part-time basis. I want to go back to being a full-time writer and ELAN is ready for a full-time ED. There is still time to apply for the job. The hiring committee will start looking at applications when everyone is back from holidays in mid-August.

What's Up in the Office
It's always a pleasure for the office staff to speak to ELAN members via phone and E-mail or face-to-face at events like the Schmoozer. Many of you have questions about what goes on behind the scenes so we will be writing a monthly column in ELANews about some of ELAN's activities that most of you are probably not aware of.
We're having a productive summer here at the ELAN office thanks in large part to two resourceful and energetic interns—Elizabeth Woodyard (Concordia fine arts student) and Aimee Velle (McGill music student). Elizabeth and Aimee have been busy distributing postcards promoting ELAN. One version of the postcard invites artists to join ELAN. These postcards have been left all over Montreal and new members are steadily joining. The alternate version targets tourists and art lovers, inviting them to consult ELAN's Arts Calendar. Elizabeth and Aimee have also been networking with members through MySpace and Facebook. Our interns have specifically focused on attracting student members to ELAN by coordinating "frosh" activities at Concordia and putting an ELAN mentorship program in the works.
The additional personpower at ELAN has enabled some "blue sky" projects to begin to take shape. On deck for Fall 2007: a grant writing workshop, an online job board, and a second installment of ELAN's Minority Anglophone Arts Promotion (MAAP) project that is designed to help ELAN make contact with the dance community and the highly disparate music community. We are also working to improve our existing website, and are offering to assist professional ELAN members who are not necessarily tech savvy with web functions such as the Arts Showcase. To this end, we will be offering an appointment-based Arts Showcase clinic starting in September at the ELAN office (4710 St-Ambroise Suite 309B). Two ELAN staff members will be available to help you get started, upload your showcase items, as well as scan your photos and optimize them for the web. For more information, E-mail our office or call (514) 935-3312.

Academos is Making a Connection with the English-Speaking Community
Do you have a few minutes every week to help students discover the new face of English-speaking artists in Quebec? Would you like to share your passion and experience over a coffee and your fuzzy bunny slippers? Academos offers mentors a free, secure and confidential website to share messages with students and help increase school motivation. This new, innovative tool is already making a difference in the lives of secondary students in the different regions of Quebec, including Montreal.
Last year, Quebec Premier Jean Charest announced a partnership with Academos as part of the 2006‑2009 Youth Action Strategy. Awarded a budget of $2.7 million over three years, Academos was mandated to gradually set up a free e‑mentoring service in French and English for students in the second cycle of high school. Nathalie Bray is responsible for the development and support of Academos in the English-speaking community of Montreal and other regions of Quebec. She has already met with several community organizations and will offer the e-mentoring service to students in the English-speaking school boards of Montreal for September 2007.
Academos is looking for passionate, driven mentors to coach high school students in their career exploration. By sharing your experiences, motivations, and advice, you can have a major impact on the future art scene in Quebec. For more information or to register, visit the Academos website and follow the link "Academos in English," or contact Nathalie Bray at (514) 332-3006 ext. 6269.

Francesca LaCoste and Ted Beaudoin have recently completed a very major goal in their personal and professional lives: a computer card game and online casino simulation program for children. The game is intended as a teaching aid for parents who are concerned about childhood gambling. LaCoste and Beaudoin accomplished this major project without any government funding. In order to finance their project, they sought and received private funding from a variety of sources, including family, friends, banks, creditors, and others.
LaCoste and Beaudoin are willing to share their knowledge of private funding and success stories with fellow ELAN members. They can be contacted by E-mail or by calling (450) 978-5250. A demo version of their game is available here.
