Director's Message
ELAN is in the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Executive Director. The Hiring Committee was pleased with the number of applicants and impressed by their quality. I expect to be able to introduce my replacement in next month's ELANews.
ELAN's third annual general meeting (AGM) is also rapidly approaching. It will take place the afternoon and early evening of November 12 at the Lion d'Or. ELAN's first two AGMs were a combination of workshop, trade fair, business meeting, party and open-mic night. While ELAN was still finding its feet, these sprawling events were the single major membership gathering. Now that ELAN is more mature, we are launching a workshop series (see above for details of September 20 Grant Writing Workshop) and hundreds of members have attended the monthly Schmoozers since they started in February. (See a selection of recent photos in the archive section of the website). The AGM no longer needs to be a multi-purpose gathering. This year it will focus on the business aspect.
The main piece of business at an AGM is to elect a new board of directors. ELAN is structured with two board members for each discipline and each of them is elected for a two year term. Their terms are staggered so that only one board member per discipline is replaced in any given year, ensuring both continuity and renewal. (The current board is listed on the website) ELAN's nominating committee is preparing a slate to ensure that all vacant positions are filled by excellent candidates for the AGM. However, the board is elected by the members and represents the members. I invite you to suggest fellow artists who credibly represent your discipline and wish to be more actively involved with ELAN. Perhaps they want to work with one of the Action Groups for a year before standing for election to the board.
During the 2006/07 year board members have been actively engaged in writing and presenting briefs to the CBC, the CRTC and the federal Standing Committee on Official Languages, as well as defending freedom of speech (War Museum), current municipal arts funding (CAM) and advocating an extension of the IPOLC agreement between Canada Council and Canadian Heritage. It is essential for ELAN to be represented by a dynamic group of board members who understand the issues in their disciplines and can argue forcefully in their defence. This year's AGM will focus on making direct connections between the board and the disciplines they represent so that ELAN can be in closer contact with members and serve them better. ELAN is still a fledgling organization whose greatest strength is its members. I look forward to seeing you at the AGM on November 12th.

What's Up in the Office
It's been a busy summer for the ELAN staff. With the help of two enthusiastic interns, the staff was able to accomplish many great things that will help move ELAN forward as a growing organization.
The ELAN staff have been working together with the Canada Council for the Arts to organize a Grant Writing workshop for Thursday September 20th, from 10am to 4pm. Registration and more information are available on the ELAN website.
Keeping the ELAN website current and up-to-date is one of the staff's primary functions. All professional members now have bios posted in the Member Profiles and are encouraged to submit their work to the Arts Showcase. The staff is offering an appointment-based Arts Showcase clinic at the ELAN office (4710 St-Ambroise Suite 309B). Sandra and Elizabeth will be available to help professional artists get started, upload showcase items, as well as scan photos and optimize them for the web. For more information, E-mail our office or call (514) 935-3312.
September brings many changes to the ELAN staff. Both Aimee and Elizabeth's internships with ELAN have come to an end. ELAN is sad to see Aimee go as she moves back to Ontario to pursue a Masters in Arts Administration. All the best Aimee! Elizabeth will be staying on as ELAN's Assistant Office Manager to Sandra Belanger.
As we lose one staff member, we gain a few. The ELAN staff will soon be expanding with the addition of a new, full-time Executive Director. We are all looking forward to welcoming the new ED to the team. ELAN is also hiring four temporary staff members to work on the second installment of ELAN's Minority Anglophone Arts Promotion (MAAP) project that is designed to help ELAN make contact with the dance and music communities. See the Job Opportunities section for more details.
As always, the ELAN staff is more than happy to share information with ELAN members through email, phone calls, or in person. The monthly social events have been a great way to meet ELAN members and we look forward to seeing new faces at the September Schmoozer.
