Director's Message

This will be my final message as ELAN's Executive Director. My commitment to ELAN was to get the organization up and running until there was enough funding to hire a full-time executive director. ELAN began as a good idea that came out of the Quebec Arts Summit in November 2004. It has been a most exciting adventure to see that idea materialize into ELAN over the past three years. None of that would have been possible without a dynamic board of directors, many dedicated staff members, solid support from funders and community partners, and of course you—the 1300+ members who have joined ELAN and added your ideas and energy.

Like most of you I am a working artist and it has been increasingly difficult to continue my own work as a writer and keep ELAN moving forward as its part-time Executive Director. It is a great relief to be able to hand the administration of ELAN to a full-time Executive Director and it is a great pleasure to introduce Michael Toppings. Michael is a graduate of McGill (English Lit/Art History) who subsequently studied creative writing at Concordia and Media Arts at the Banff Centre for the Arts. As an artist, he has written numerous dramatic, spoken word and performance pieces. (see his on-line bio) Michael also has extensive experience as an arts administrator. During the 90s he worked as an artist and administrator in Vancouver and Saskatchewan. Most recently with two major companies in Montreal's dance community: PPS Danse and Sinha Danse.

I admit to leaving ELAN with much regret, but the organization can afford now afford a full-time Executive Director, and the work-load has become far too demanding for a part-time contract. Although it was my intention to remain involved with ELAN in some capacity, I was caught off guard when the board of directors asked me if I would consider running as president. We talked about it at some length about the pros and cons. The part of the job I always like best was working with the membership. So I agreed to stand as president at the November 12 AGM. I will be happy to continue my involvement with ELAN for another year or two if the members choose to elect me.

Guy Rodgers
Executive Director

Michael's Message

In applying for the position of Executive Director with ELAN I was driven by 4 notable factors (or the four Cs as I came to call them)—they being community, contribution, challenge and change. As an artist and cultural worker, I am extremely aware of the importance of community and was especially intrigued by ELAN, it being a centre situated within a multi-layering of communities—all of which co-exist within the larger community of Québec.

As the new Executive Director, I am here, above all, to listen and learn. I envision my role as a facilitator, navigator and instigator of change—particularly change that is driven by and beneficial to you, the membership. ELAN is an organization growing at an expediential rate with tremendous future potential—potential with regards to advocacy, professional development, resource and networking, and in developing artistic projects, activities and events that will foster communication between diverse cultures, languages and artistic disciplines. I look forward to contributing to the growth, vitality and viability of ELAN and in further shaping it into an organization that best serves the membership and corresponding communities. I hope to meet as many of you as possible at the AGM!

What's New?

ELAN's 3rd Annual General Meeting

Monday 12 November, 19h00–21h00 + schmoozing.
Lion d'Or, 1676 Ontario est. (near Papineau).

The AGM will take a different format this year. ELAN is increasingly moving from web-based network to a people-based network. Once the business reports and elections are complete we want to take some time for members to meet the new board and for all members to come up to the mic to say Hi so we can all attach names and disciplines to faces.

ELAN's board is structured with two reps for each discipline. The discipline pairs will spend time with all the members of their discipline to take the pulse of their sector. ELAN's successes have all been driven by members with ideas and some time and energy to help realize them. As the number of active members grows, ELAN can find solutions for larger problems.

This is an important opportunity for you to the elect the new board, get an up-to-date report on what ELAN is doing, find out how to play a role in up-coming activities, and meet other ELAN members at the best schmoozer of the year. Please let us know you're coming by RSVPing to info@quebec-elan.org. Put AGM in the subject heading.

The AGM is an opportunity for you make your work known to fellow ELAN members. If you have a newly launched CD, recently published book, small painting or other work of art you would like to donate as a door prize, please contact the office.

The Schmoozer

schmooze \'shmüz\ vb 1: socialize: talk to people: mill about: have a drink: meet new people: see old friends: forget about work for a few hours

The November Schmoozer has been cancelled so that all members can come out to the Annual General Meeting on Monday November 12.

MAAP II

In 2005/06 ELAN received Canadian Heritage funding to contact Quebec's English-speaking visual artists to find out what problems and obstacles they faced. ELAN also worked closely with le Regroupement des artistes en arts visuels (RAAV) to provide more support for their English speaking members. The MAAP project allowed ELAN to develop close ties with RAAV, to develop services specifically for the visual arts and to attract more than 250 visual artists members.

For 2007/08 ELAN received additional Canadian Heritage funding to contact Quebec's English-speaking music and dance sectors to find out what problems and obstacles they face. ELAN has been fortunate to hire four very talented and energetic artists for this MAAP II project. They are: Sarah Wendt (dance), Louise Campbell (music), Simon Wayland (music) and Jonathan Lindhorst (music). During the coming months they will contact ELAN members as well as the multitude of musicians and dancers who are not yet ELAN members. They already have many ideas for projects that can benefit the music and dance sectors.
