President's Message
ELAN's third Annual General Meeting on Nov 12 was a lively gathering at the Lion d'Or. I want to welcome the other newly elected board members: Brandi-Ann Milbrandt (Film and TV), Heidi Fleming and Kathy Kennedy (music), Mariko Tanabe (dance), and Tod Van Dyk (visual arts). We join an experienced group of artists who were elected in 2006 for two-year terms.
ELAN spent its first three years developing web-based resources, but there is no substitute for contact with real people, which was evident once again at the AGM. As executive director, I was constantly impressed by the enormous energy and expertise in our community. One of the main goals in the coming year is for ELAN's board to work with members to help transform that energy and expertise into tangible results.
Guy Rodgers
President
Director's Message
Although not a new-year, it is however post-AGM, a time to look ahead, to reassess, reaffirm and plan for the months to come. ELAN, in a very short period of time, has successfully realized a number of key objectives stemming from its mandate—creating a comprehensive network for English speaking artists within Quebec, developing an online resource centre, and acting as both provider and disseminator of essential information to a vastly growing membership.
The goal now, as we look to the future, is to maintain existing services as well as to expand upon those services using the strategic plan as base and catalyst, and to develop new projects that place art at the forefront. Projected is an arts/education analysis of the current situation within Québec with regards to the placement of arts within the English-language educational system, and in development are projects that include an artist-in-residence program that encompasses rural and urban exchange, and an annual arts event showcasing the work of ELAN members.
These are but a few ideas either on the table, in development or just beginning to form themselves. There will, without a doubt, be more as ELAN continues to grow as an organization and responds to the needs of its membership. Our shape and composition may change as a result of this growth but the nucleus will remain constant…advocacy, arts and services and in enhancing the vitality, visibility and viability of English-language communities throughout Québec.
Michael Toppings
Executive Director
What's New?
The Schmoozer
schmooze \'shmüz\ vb 1: socialize: talk to people: mill about: have a drink: meet new people: see old friends: forget about work for a few hours
The December Schmoozer will take place at the Divan Orange on Wednesday, December 19th, from 5 to 7 pm. This will be our last Schmoozer of 2007, so if you haven't made it out this year, now is your chance! The Schmoozer is an opportunity to meet other ELAN members in a social setting. We are a very diverse bunch of artists, and these events are always a good time. To help us cater for this event, please RSVP to the ELAN office by sending an email with "Schmoozer" in the subject line.
ELAN is interested in touring the Schmoozer to different locations in Montreal. If you have any suggestions of great bars around the city where you would like to meet with other artists from ELAN, please email the office your suggestions.
MAAP II Surveys Available Online
ELAN has hired four dynamic individuals to work on the second instalment of the Minority Anglophone Arts Promotion (MAAP) to examine the needs of the music and dance communities in Quebec. The MAAP II team has put together two brief surveys and would greatly appreciate your feedback on existing and future ELAN services. If you are involved in the music or dance scene, please take a couple minutes to fill out this online survey. Help make ELAN what you want it to be! The music survey is available here. The dance survey is available here.
Fees Questionnaire Survey Available online
Since its creation in 2005 ELAN has grown rapidly, adding members and services. Not-for-profit organizations are under increasing pressure to generate earned income. This is normally raised from membership fees and/or service fees. The board of ELAN is asking for input from members about the types of fees that are reasonable for the services ELAN provides. Please take a moment to fill out this short online questionnaire.
ELAN Closed for the Holidays
The ELAN office will be closed from December 24 to January 4th, with offices re-opening on the 7th. Please be advised that we will not be answering emails during this time. The January edition of ELANews will be made available on January 7, 2008. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2007. We wish you a very happy holiday, from all of the ELAN staff.
