President's Message
As many of you know, ELAN received a project grant to make contact with the music and dance communities and explore their needs. This is the second phase of a project that began with the visual arts community two years ago in collaboration with le regroupement des artistes en arts visuels (RAAV). Musicians and visual artists tend to work in isolation and rely on word of mouth for information about grant, support and opportunities. An organization like ELAN can provide support and a means of communication.
During the past few months, four project staff have been surveying musicians and dancers, asking what services, information and professional development would enable ELAN to help them pursue their careers. The response has been solid, and is starting to give us a comprehensive view of needs and generate ideas for future projects. If you are a musician or dancer and have not yet had a chance to fill out the survey, please take a few minutes now to fill it out on the ELAN homepage (see MAAP II Music Survey or MAAP II Dance Survey). Your input will help ELAN help you.

What's New?
THE SCHMOOZER
schmooze \'shmüz\ vb 1: socialize: talk to people: mill about: have a drink: meet new people: see old friends: forget about work for a few hours
This month's schmoozer is scheduled for Tuesday March 11, from 5 to 7 pm at Brutopia. This cozy brew pub is a gem in the heart of downtown Montreal. It consists of three bars on three floors. We will be meeting in the basement lounge. Brutopia is located at 1219 Crescent St. between Ste-Catherine and Rene-Levesque Blvd. (metro Lucien-L'Allier).
The ELAN Schmoozer is a great opportunity to support a new local venue and meet other ELAN members in a relaxed and social setting. If you have any favourite bars that you would like to suggest for a future Schmoozer location (must be near a metro), please contact the ELAN office. To help us prepare for the next Schmoozer, please RSVP to the ELAN office by sending an email with "Schmoozer" in the subject line.

back to topBOARD speak
This new feature provides both an opportunity for Board members to sound off on concerns and issues particular to their individual sector, and also provides an opportunity for our readers to learn more about them through a series of mini-portraits of each - their background, passions and art practice.
This month's featured board member is KIRWAN COX.
Kirwan is one of two ELAN representatives from the Film & Television sector. He is a veteran producer, researcher, writer, consultant, and lecturer. He sits on numerous boards of directors and advisory boards and is an active lobbyist for English-language film and TV in Quebec.
"A lot of what I do is trying to change things, make Canadian culture stronger" said Kirwan in a phone interview recently. Through his involvement with ELAN, the Documentary Organization of Canada, and with the English-language Film/TV Council of Quebec, Kirwan is trying to improve the artistic and cultural landscape of Quebec.
Currently, he is studying the decline of English-language film and TV programming in Quebec, and what can be done to re-establish a higher level of production. According to Kirwan, without a language-barrier, English-Canadian film and TV must constantly struggle with better-financed American films in a marketplace that is reserved for Hollywood. Kirwan believes artists have to be aware of the political environment if they hope to have a place on our screens. Next the greatest culture factory in the world, we must be able to see ourselves, to know who we are, and have a strong sense of identity. Or we will surely disappear. "It is critical that there are structures in place to support domestic production. A strong popular culture is really a matter of national survival."
Kirwan lives in a converted nunnery in Rigaud. A film that impressed him recently is "Up the Yangtze" by Yung Chang. He describes it as a beautiful film that looks at a society through the personal lens of a family losing their home to the Three Gorges dam. "It is Shakespearean. The father is a poor labourer from the old China who can't afford to send his daughter to university. She is ashamed of her father, and must work on a tourist boat that floats on the river that is drowning her family home. She represents the new China that may be losing the values of the old China. Beautiful film!"

Want to know what your fellow ELAN members are up to? This month, we have info about the following members:
Abu Jafar
Abu Jafar creates large canvases that are riots of colour, yet conjure simple images and impressions - rain dripping slowly down a windowpane or the colours of an optimistic summer's day. His painting "Under the Blue" is currently for sale in silent auction at Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London. This painting took many years to complete, through the painstaking process of layering colour on top of colour resulting in a luminescence and the sense of a moment halted. Proceeds from the sale will benefit victims of the cyclone Sidr, which struck Bangladesh in November 2007. The reserve price is $23,010.00. To place a bid, please contact Sophie Persson at Asia House +44(0)27307 5454. The Auction will close on Friday March 7, 2008.
Muriel Gold, C.M., Ph.D.
Muriel Gold, former Artistic Director of the Saidye Bronfman Centre, was recently named to the Order of Canada for lifetime achievement in the field of theatre and drama. With a view that theatre could serve as a bridge between cultures, she was a pioneer in introducing French-Canadian plays to English audiences. It was early in her tenure that Dora Wasserman's Yiddish theatre became a resident company of the Centre. Her latest book "A Gift for their Mother. The Saidye Bronfman Centre Theatre. A History" was published by MIRI productions last October. Close to 150 people turned up for the book launch held at the Segal Centre. In addition, her chapter "Unrestricted Dream" was included in the book "Living Legacies: A Collection of Inspirational Contemporary Jewish Women" edited by Liz Pearl, PK Press, 2008. She is the author of other books including "Tell Me Why Nights are Lonesome" Shoreline Press, 2004, "The Fictional Family in Drama, Education and Groupwork" CC Thomas 1990 and "Therapy Through Drama. The Fictional Family." CC Thomas, 2000.

David James
Glass artist David James of Sutton, Québec is successfully exploring new media. He has transformed his cast glass sculpture 'Heaven & Earth' into a monumental Belfast black granite work. The base is in black granite, rough and highly polished. Sitting on top is a mirror-finished 30-inch diameter stainless steel ball. The two-part sculpture is 60 inches long, 30 inches wide and 52 inches high. It weighs about 1,500 pounds. It has been accepted for this year's exhibition of public art at the sculpture park at the Côte d'Ardoise vineyard, west of Dunham in the Eastern Townships of Québec.
