ELANews

The Newsletter of the English-Language Arts Network

Director's Message

Building a new organization from scratch is a fascinating process. The first reaction from most people, who are already overbooked professionally and personally, is "Why on earth do we need a new organization?" So far, several dozen people, from all disciplines have seen enough promise in ELAN to volunteer their time and expertise to get it up and running. As the identity and potential usefulness of the new organization emerge the next question is, "Why should I become a member?" In ELAN's case, more than 900 people have found a satisfactory answer and signed up.

ELAN is now at the point where members are saying, "The website and newsletters are fine, but where is the human network?" That question is being answered by the various Action Groups that started meeting in the New Year. Response to the Professional Development survey was remarkable. The desire for a wide range of workshops was clearly communicated. ELAN's role as a network is to compliment services already offered by other organizations and make them available to a wider range of artists. The committee is now looking at potential workshop partners like Youth Employment Services (YES), the Quebec Writers' Federation (QWF) and the Quebec Drama Federation (QDF). Some types of workshops are discipline specific, others can be opened up to artists from all disciplines.

The Social Group has hosted two successful Schmoozer events and is planning to meet regularly on the second Monday of each month. These gatherings provide an excellent opportunity to meet new people, explore ideas and find collaborators. See below for the details.

During the past month ELAN's board members and staff have been busy working on a strategic plan. Many thanks to members who participated via interviews or questionnaires. What is the purpose of this strategic plan? It is very simply to clarify ELAN's purpose and priorities. After two years of existence the community has some strong opinions about where ELAN's energy and resources are best invested. As members develop a sense of ownership they will shape ELAN into a community network that serves their needs.

Members' Bios

ELAN's website was built in stages with the help of project grants. The earliest stages were fairly ad hoc and low budget. One of the purposes of the website was to create a cyber community. Members' bios are a basic part of getting to know who people are and what they do. All new professional members submit a bio but there are still members from the early stages who have never sent in a bio. If that is you, please take a few minutes and send it in now. If you need help, call the office at (514) 935-3312.
