ELAN member Cheryl Braganza has been appointed President of the Women's Art Society of Montreal. The WASM was founded in 1894 by two Montreal women, Phillips & Peck, and is one of the earliest organizations for women in the country. It's main purpose was to create a general interest and to encourage a higher standard in all the arts. Essentially, it paved the way for the integration of women into the art world.
Today, 120 years later, the general focus of WASM remains the same - which is to promote literature, music and the visual arts in Montreal, through lectures, concerts (traditionally at the McCord Museum) and exhibits (at Tudor Hall, Ogilvy's). Cheryl Braganza, herself a painter, a pianist and a writer, brings to the position, her experience on the Boards of the Montreal Council of Women, the Montreal Children's Library and her membership and collaboration with organizations such as DAM (Diversité Artistique Montréal), QWF (Quebec Writers Federation), ELAN (English Language Arts Network) & SEDE (Social Equity & Diversity - McGill).
"If any ELAN members wish to submit a proposal to present at one of our Tuesday daytime events, kindly contact me by email (cheryl@cherylbraganza.com) & I will be happy to provide more information".
