I am... / Je suis... Concert by Adleisia Women's Choir

Start Date: Sat 07 May, 2016
End Date: Sat 07 May, 2016

Community Events

“I am… / Je suis…”: Adleisia is proud to present a spring concert celebrating and exploring the complexities of identity, freedom, and womanhood.

Adleisia is an 18-voice women’s choir, composed primarily of and directed by former members of the award-winning chamber choir Concerto Della Donna, which was led by Iwan Edwards until his retirement in 2014.

This concert will highlight the works of many young contemporary composers, such as Costas Dafnis and Marie-Claire Saindon, in conjunction with well-known classics such as Gabriel Fauré and Lili Boulanger.

The concert will explore a variety of cultures from across the globe: for instance, we will be performing a welcome chant from the Tsimshian indigenous community of British Columbia, an arrangement by Abbie Betinis combining the Buddhist “Great Compassion Mantra” with two poems which signify the hurt and pain of the world and emphasize the need for compassion and good karma. A composition by Joan Szymko based on a Bantu adage from Uganda is also included in the program.

A central theme throughout this concert is the various facets of womanhood and femininity. We thus explore a variety of these different sides, including motherhood, with Don MacDonald’s Tabula Rasa, sensuality and seduction with Lili Boulanger’s Les Sirènes, as well as female strength with Joan Szymco’s Malala, Kim Baryluk’s Warrior, and Libby Larsen’s Womanly Song of God.

The show will feature Adleisia, under the artistic direction of Amelia McMahon and Virginie Pacheco, along with cellist Jane Chan, percussionist Ben Duinker, and pianist Pamela Reimer.

The concert will take place on May 7th at Christ Church Cathedral, at 8pm. Tickets are 20$ for adults and 10$ for students and seniors.
