Authentic Movement is a practice rooted in modern dance, psychology and eastern thought that looks to the body as source and inspiration.
This workshop offers an introduction to the practice as it relates to the creative process, to that part of making that requires an open, non-judgmental awareness and a willingness to stay in the unknown. Leaving aside for the time being our desire to invent, to direct, to be creative, we learn instead to listen and allow, paying attention to what our body is asking of us, to what it has to say in the moment. We learn about remaining present without imposing meaning or intent and we practice letting go of expectations and goals. The structure is simple: a mover moves with eyes closed in the presence of a witness. Within varying time frames, we explore what it means to listen for and embody impulses that arise from within, all the while remaining connected to sensation and true to what needs to happen. The workshop will explore both the moving and the witnessing aspects of the form. It is open to artists of all disciplines and does not require a movement background.
Tedi Tafel makes site-specific performance events that blend movement, sound, video and architecture. Her works challenge the dictates of the cityscape in terms of how we perceive our surroundings and how we habitually move inside them. For her, the body is the very site and vehicle of direct experience and movement is an entranceway into the deeper layers of what it is to be human. She has been greatly influenced by her studies in Japan with Butoh masters Min Tanaka and Kazuo Ohno and her long-term work with Authentic Movement pioneers Janet Alder and Judith Koltai. For the past 20 years, Tedi has presented her work and taught across Canada and in Europe. Since 1996, she has been a movement instructor for actors, playwrights and directors at the National Theatre School of Canada. As a teacher of Authentic Movement, she has worked extensively with artists of all disciplines.
