Caravan
A variety of different balances were experienced with "Caravan". The winged character at the left is a reference to "aerodynamic balance", giving flight to the otherwise heavy mass of rocks. The wings are assembled by placing the edge of the flat rocks into the open spaces between the base and the pre-balanced vertical rock (each rock is balanced to the point where they cannot move unless forcefully pushed). Once the wing is secured at the desired angle, an wedged "shim" is placed between the bottom surface of the wing and the base rock slab. The wings began to appear in 2003 and have become part of the rock balance art vocabulary. At the center of "Caravan", is "suspended balance", an interesting concept which appears to be pushing the two columns outward, yet remains balanced and stable. To the right is "The twins and mamma", with head stones kissing with an angled open portal between them.
"Caravan" was inspired by "Saltimbanco", which was created and first performed by by Réne Bazinet, has remained in production by Le Cirque du Soleil since 1992.
The sculpture was the largest of the 2008 project and measured 11 feet in height.
All prints are reconditioned in photoshop, imitating a gum dichromate non silver print. Photographed in September with a Nikon D 80 wide angle lens.
Giclée prints of the sculptures are available on water color paper at any size.
