circle book spiral
This is a reinvented book, the pages liberated from the conventional binding & attached in their chronological order left to right, the book reformatted into a sort of spiral scroll that stands up on the ground. It is an old book about the ‘end of symbolism’ which is morphed into a spiral, the symbol of infinity, & demands to be read differently due to its new shape. Does it spiral inward or out? I suppose it reflects the circularity of events, history, trends, ideas, philosophies and the meanings we put on them. It ultimately attempts to undermine the post-modern notion that it’s all been done before. There is an unintended irony in the usage of a book about the ‘end of symbolism’. I call this technique ‘anachronicity’; employing seemingly anachronistic materials or symbols (book) to produce the suggestion of modernity or technology. A comment on change for change’s sake, planned obsolescence and post-modern thinking. To add to the ‘anachronicity’, this is an unabashed attempt at creating ‘beauty’, itself having been deemed anachronistic in much recent art theory. It is beauty as bi-product. Other materials used in this performance ‘Circle’ were 12 wooden easels, paper, cardboard & light. Much of the installation appeared during the improvised performances reaffirming that most invention is the result of physical action as opposed to thought itself.
