Summary:
A solo finger-style acoustic guitar piece. An homage to the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré.
This is an excerpt of a finger-style guitar piece that is a tribute or homage to the late Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré. It was written on the eve of his passing this spring, upon hearing the news of it on CBC’s As It Happens. Essentially, it is my reaction to this news & a simultaneous expression of my own grief along with an attempt at paying homage to one of the only guitar players I listen to with any regularity. A great player, & a distant mentor of sorts. I tried, not-too-consciously, to fuse the reckless ambience of Malian guitar with my own western folk-inflected, finger-style guitar technique on this piece, using my reliable Martin SPOM 16 guitar & at least nine of my fingers. It was recorded on a DAT recorder with a stereo microphone.
