Track #4 of the album Quaraaluktuq by Michael Reinhart & Singers of Nunavut released in 2003. This is a meeting of North & South; of two cultures, Inuit & Western; & two eras, tradition/past & contemporary/present. It is a melding of Inuit throat-singing & contemporary acoustic instrumentation including the Inuit drum & the accordion, an especially prevalent instrument in the North, as are jigs, reels & step dancing; something that is hopefully reflected in the joyous, rousing music of Party. The vocals were recorded with a Tascam portable DAT recorder 'in situ' in Igloolik during a two-week movement & music workshop given by dancer Lin Snelling & myself in March 2000. Participants were primarily Inuit elder women & a theatre group Inikatuatit (Storytellers). A tape loop was created later of a throat-singing segment which became the rhythm track for my own composition. The instrumental music was created in Spring 2003 in Montreal & recorded on a Roland VS880 8-track recorder, with acoustic instruments including accordion, guitar, spoons, sticks, kalimba & Inuit drum.
