She makes tactile drawings and artists&#8217; books exploring gender, media consumption and representation, and personal archives. Congdon holds a BFA from NSCAD University, where she received the Marg\u00f3 Marshall Award for Textiles. Congdon has recently exhibited at the <a href=\"http:\/\/theanna.nscad.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anna Leonowens Gallery<\/a> in Halifax, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redheadgallery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Red Head Gallery<\/a> in Toronto, and <a href=\"https:\/\/monastiraki.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galerie Monastiraki<\/a> in Montreal. Her artists&#8217; book &#8220;Want to buy some illusions?&#8221; is currently featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/artofthebook18.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art of the Book 2018<\/a>, a traveling exhibition of work by members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26135 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3070\" height=\"2047\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;Notebook 1&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Embroidery and textiles are politically loaded media, traditionally seen as utilitarian women\u2019s handiwork, and not historically given much artistic clout. ELAN member Clara Congdon\u2019s work fits within an experimental milieu that is still challenging the accepted norms of creating and exhibiting embroidery, quilting, and other textile-based arts. Congdon\u2019s work also explores the form of the book as a conduit for unusual experiences of reading.<\/p>\n<p>Drawn to the tactility of textiles, Clara Congdon works with three-dimensional media at the intersection of collage, embroidery, bookbinding, illustration and sculpture. She often reuses thread from old clothing, lending an intimacy to her work and creating contrasts between ink and paint, cloth, muslin, satin, plastic, coarse thread, or old gloves. Congdon describes her use of thread and cloth as a drawing medium: \u201cCloth and paper are a rich starting point because they are accessible media that everyone relates to\u2014we interact with them in everyday life. Textiles also refer directly to clothing and the body, the politicization and policing of which are central concerns of my practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26207 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Sussi300ppi-e1550168045512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"356\" \/>\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26205 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SiteR_Loubli2_7-8-e1550168066668.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;Sussi&#8221;, Drag Portraits (left), and &#8220;L&#8217;oubli No. 2&#8221;, Sewn Bound, Cover: Inkjet, Pages: Laser, Colour. 2018 (right).<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Congdon\u2019s hanging tapestry installation, entitled \u201cVolume 1\u201d, reflects the material items that were important for the artist. \u201cIn the way that you can tell what people value by what they take pictures of, I think you can also get insight into what a person values by observing what material objects they chose to hold on to.\u201d Congdon&#8217;s work is informed by a diverse range of performing arts, comedy and costume design. She lists her inspirations as Louise Bourgeois, Faith Ringgold, Tracey Emin, Tschabalala Self, Kai Chan, Anna Torma, and drag artists. Her most recent work-in-progress is a zine titled<em> You Betcha Iris<\/em>, that profiles one Montreal drag performer per issue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-26139 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Site_DellaCommission_1_scan-copy-e1550003145616.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"546\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/SiteR_Loubli1_Front-copy-e1550003160272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"554\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;Proceed Inward Until the Last Instant&#8221; (left), and &#8220;L&#8217;oubli No. 1&#8221;, Sewn Bound, Inkjet, Colour. 2018 (right).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Congdon&#8217;s \u201cCalendar Series\u201d combines the themes of \u201cgender, media consumption and representation, and personal archives\u201d, chronicling her day-to-day experience through miniature quilts. At the end of the month, she stitches these quilts together, creating a reflection of the materials, experiences, and inspirations she was exposed to. \u201cOne month was documented by stitching the headline that appeared most frequently on my phone\u2019s news app each day,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnother month, I stitched the name of a woman or non-binary creator whose work I consumed. In May 2018, I simply taught myself new embroidery techniques by practicing a different type of stitch each day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26143 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2017_May_background_saturation-copy-1030x752.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"752\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;May 2017&#8221;, Calendars.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26209\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2018_February_saturation_background.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3464\" height=\"2530\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;February 2018&#8221;, Calendars.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Live exhibitions are important for Congdon, as digital media does not convey the tactility of her work and the importance of touching the materials. She has exhibited across Canada and in the United States, and participated in the Montreal fairs <a href=\"http:\/\/expozine.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Expozine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/artch.org\/\">Artch : art contemporain \u00e9mergent<\/a>, and What the Pop!, as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cbbagottawa.ca\/2018\/05\/24\/book-arts-show-and-sale-2018-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBBAG Book Arts Show and Sale<\/a> in Ottawa. Congdon describes one of the challenges of exhibiting at commercial arts galleries as framing or preparing the art to be hung, seeing the restriction as a creative opportunity: \u201cIt usually needs to be ready for someone to walk away with it on the spot\u201d. Congdon also describes the value of participating in art fairs which, though they may not garner many sales, consistently lead to more connections and opportunities.\u00a0Describing her experience in getting into exhibitions, Congdon says, \u201cSometimes curators have seen my work at another show and have encouraged me to apply to the group show they are putting together. Sometimes they find me online.
