I remember thinking, almost\u00a0immediately, this is a young warrior. This\u00a0is someone who is\u00a0going to be part of the next generation of Indigenous theatre artists in this country who will help steward our stories with care, power,\u00a0humour, and truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I say this without reservation.\u00a0Wahsont\u00ed:io\u00a0is one of the most talented actors I have ever had the privilege of directing. They are precise, alive, generous, funny, deeply instinctive, and completely present. They are also a joy to be in a room with, which is not a small thing. Talent matters, but how someone carries that talent matters too.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wahsont\u00ed:io\u2019s\u00a0relationship with Geordie goes back to the\u00a0pandemic, when\u00a0they were cast as part of our 2Play Tour. It was a strange time for\u00a0everyone, and\u00a0required\u00a0a lot of what we were all calling \u201cpivoting\u201d at the time, which is a word I think we would all be happy to never hear again. Rather than\u00a0cancel\u00a0the tour or pre-record\u00a0the shows, Geordie chose to livestream both productions to students every morning. It was not easy. It asked a lot of\u00a0the artists. And\u00a0Wahsont\u00ed:io\u00a0met that moment with generosity, focus, and courage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They were also part of From the Stars in the Sky to the Fish in the Sea, the first Mainstage show Geordie produced under my artistic direction. That production mattered deeply to me, and\u00a0Wahsont\u00ed:io\u00a0was part of helping shape that beginning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But it was not until we worked together more recently as\u00a0actor\u00a0and director on the remount of Celestial Bodies that I\u00a0truly understood\u00a0the level of talent\u00a0Wahsont\u00ed:io\u00a0carries. I picked up a binder that, as it turned out, had\u00a0a very special\u00a0meaning to me.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Geordie has a long history with an initiative called From You\u00a0To\u00a0Us\u00a0To\u00a0You. The idea is simple and beautiful. We reach out to schools and ask students to respond artistically to a prompt. They send us stories, poems, drawings, songs, and ideas, and then we build a show from those responses and bring it back to them in performance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I was fresh out of theatre school, my first professional job as an actor was with Geordie\u2019s 2Play Tour. One of the shows that year was a From You\u00a0To\u00a0Us\u00a0To\u00a0You piece called Once Upon\u00a0A\u00a0Home, created by Amanda Kellock. It was about what home meant to those kids. It was a wild show, in the best way, and looking through that binder brought so much of that time rushing back to me.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The binder was from Karonhian\u00f3nhnha Tsi\u00a0Ionterihwaienst\u00e1hkhwa, an elementary school in\u00a0Kahnaw\u00e0:ke. The submissions were organized alphabetically, and as I\u00a0turned\u00a0the final pages, I came across this wonderful drawing of a UFO. I should admit here that I am very much a UFO and UAP person, so obviously this caught my attention.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But then I recognized the story. I did not know that years later I would meet them at the National Theatre School and\u00a0immediately\u00a0recognize something fierce and special in them. I did not know I would eventually get to direct them, or watch them bring so much intelligence,\u00a0humour, and spirit to Celestial Bodies. But somehow, before any of that,\u00a0Wahsont\u00ed:io\u2019s\u00a0imagination had already found its way into my own first chapter with Geordie.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That little UFO drawing, tucked away at the end of a binder from Karonhian\u00f3nhnha Tsi\u00a0Ionterihwaienst\u00e1hkhwa, was not just a student submission anymore. It became this strange and beautiful reminder that our stories had crossed paths long before either of us knew it. Their\u00a0voice\u00a0had already helped shape a show that shaped me. Their story had already been part of Geordie\u2019s story, and, without me knowing it, part of mine too.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That is the kind of full circle moment that reminds me why this work matters.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wahsont\u00ed:io\u00a0is not only an extraordinary performer. Working on a project with majority\u00a0Kanien&#8217;k\u00e9ha\u00a0(Mohawk) artists, unearthing truths about my Nation (and other Nations&#8217;) belonging to the island of\u00a0Tiohti\u00e1:ke, and depicting these truths through a stylistic, ancient, otherworldly way was incredibly rewarding.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Which mentor figure(s) made the greatest impact on you?\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A mentor figure of mine is Heather White. She is an artist and educator from\u00a0Kahnaw\u00e1:ke\u00a0Mohawk Territory. She taught me when I was about 9 years\u00a0old, and\u00a0always instilled a belief in my abilities. She has always championed\u00a0me, and\u00a0continued her\u00a0encouragement of me\u00a0through all of these years. I am so forever grateful to have met her and been taught by her in my formative years.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>If you could tell your younger self something, what would it be?<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If I could tell my younger self something, I would say that our career will not look like what we\u00a0imagined, but\u00a0will be much more rewarding.
