Letter from the Executive Director, December 2022

As we wind down 2022, I want to make sure that a few ELAN events and activities don’t get lost in the holiday noise. We recently launched our new website and are really happy with the results, please check it out if you haven’t already. Our Québec Relations team have also been hard at work updating their website so I strongly encourage everyone to check it out. If you aren’t familiar with QR please take the time to have a look and learn about all the services offered (it can help you find funding money. Really. Go check it out).

Also, if you don’t already know about the recently launched Community Digital Arts Hub (CDAH) it is a great resource for an artist of any discipline. CDAH and the team can help you get that audition tape done without your dog barking in the background, help you to create high-quality promotional material, or just give you access to an affordable, professional space to be able to record that podcast you are sure will be the next Serial.

As for the ELAN team, we are going to take a well-deserved break and our offices are closed from December 19th and open on January 9^th. We will need our energy for all the exciting things we are planning for 2023 – stay tuned.

Land Acknowledgement

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
