DESCRIPTION

The CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec) and the Théâtre du Rideau Vert are partnering to offer a residency program for Deaf  artists or artists with a disability (including those who are hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted, artists with diverse abilities and neurodivergent artists), as well as for collectives that include people experiencing these realities.

This residency fosters inclusion, recognition and professional development of Québec theatre artists. By supporting their artistic practice and offering them adapted conditions for creation, the CALQ and the Théâtre du Rideau Vert would like to contribute to more equitable representation of a diversity of practices and voices on the arts scene.

Lasting five months, the residency offers the selected artists or collectives a setting conducive to research, experimentation, and creation. It makes it possible to explore new theatrical forms and strengthen their ties with the theatre community.

This program has grown out of the CALQ’s and the Théâtre du Rideau Vert’s shared desire to foster access to and full participation in artistic life for Deaf artists and artists living with a disability and to make theatre a space for expression, encounters and equity.

The duration of the residency is five months, from February to June 2027. The amount of the grant is $30,000.

CRITERIA

Eligibility is for individual and collective projects by a professional theatre artist with a disability who would like to develop a research, exploration or creation project in a professional, inclusive setting.

Applications from a group of artists for a joint project must be presented by a single applicant artist, who must meet the program’s eligibility criteria.

If the application is accepted, the grant will be paid to the applicant artist who, as the grant recipient representing the group, will be responsible for managing the project and the budget.

 

Ineligibility

  • Projects carried out under the supervision of an educational program are ineligible.
  • A project that has already been rejected by the CALQ is ineligible for this program.
  • A group legally constituted as a not-for-profit or profit-making company or general partnership is ineligible for this program.
  • Incomplete applications.

EXPENSES

The CALQ will award the selected artist or collective a grant of $30,000 to cover eligible expenses related to the residency, including:

  • remuneration for the applicant;
  • fees for participating artists and contributors;
  • expenses for project research and development;
  • production costs, including the purchase of materials and equipment rentals.

The artist or collective selected will receive:

  • a workspace at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert;
  • 120 hours of studio time for stage exploration;
  • personalized support and artistic mentorship;
  • networking activities and meetings with specialists from the theatre world;
  • technical and logistical advice tailored to their needs.

Additional financial aid  may also be granted upon request to help cover some of the additional costs related to the artist’s disability (technical support, assistance or necessary accommodations)

Land Acknowledgement

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
