DESCRIPTION

An international Francophone event that uniquely combines sport and culture, the Jeux de la Francophonie celebrates Francophone youth every four years through sporting competitions and cultural contests, under the banner of solidarity, diversity and excellence.

As a member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the Government of Québec has participated in the event since the first Games and sends a sports and arts delegation.

In collaboration with the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) is responsible for the national pre-selection process for the cultural competitions. This call for applications aims to shortlist one to three candidates per competition, for final selection by the International Committee of the Jeux de la Francophonie.

As part of the 2027 Yerevan Games, the Government of Quebec is entered in nine cultural competitions for which it is seeking entries at the national pre-selection stage. The cultural competitions are as follows:

  • Song
  • Storytelling
  • Digital creation
  • Contemporary dance
  • Literature (short story)
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Sculpture / Installation
  • Theatre

CRITERIA

To be eligible for this competition, artists or group members applying must:

  • be Canadian citizens as of 23 January 2027 and have resided in Quebec for the past twelve (12) months;
  • be aged between 18 and 35 during the Games (born between 1992 and 2009). The age limit applies to competing artists, writers and performers. For disciplines where support staff may be required (artists or technicians), these individuals are not subject to this criterion;
  • be professional writers or artists, create works or practise an art form on their own account, or offer their services for remuneration as a creator or performer, and be recognised by their peers;
  • have participated in at least one independent production during or following their training, presented in a context recognised by peers within the discipline of the competition for which they are applying;
    OR
    in literature: have published, in a context recognised by peers, at least one book or a minimum of three texts in a literary genre eligible for the CALQ. Electronic publications, self-published works and self-publishing are also eligible. The context recognised by peers excludes the academic research sector and the educational publishing sector;
    OR
    in visual arts and digital creation: have publicly exhibited a work or a body of works in a context recognised by peers within the discipline of the competition for which they are applying. These works must have been produced independently of their studies or after completing them;
  • commit to being present in Yerevan for the entire duration of the Games and agree, in addition to the competition, to participate in the entertainment programme and scheduled workshops.

EXPENSES

Total funding amount varies (see discipline-specific eligibility conditions for more information).

All the artist’s travel (including equipment) and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Government of Quebec and the organising committee of the Jeux de la Francophonie. In addition, a stipend will be provided to the artist for their stay in Yerevan, Armenia. The CALQ offers financial support to artists with disabilities to ensure they have access to its services. Land Acknowledgement

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
