The Arts and Older Adults

Julie Pomerleau

Visual Arts

My goal working with older adults is to provide a calm and safe learning experience where participants can explore art without the pressures of being “good enough”. Learning and art help form new neuro connections in the brain. I am passionate about teaching, mental health, and art. When I teach I am sharing my passion and it fulfills my sense of purpose. All older adults should have the opportunity to learn and play. By providing a visual learning experience, an auditory learning experience, demonstrations and individual guidance I make sure nobody is left behind.

Sample workshop:

My most popular workshop is a 2 hour introduction to watercolour workshop that can be a standalone workshop or a series. It is taught in a hybrid environment. I am in person giving instructions but additionally, I am capturing my work surface via zoom and either projecting it or casting it through a TV. This offers both an auditory teaching method combined with a visual teaching method.

What I enjoy about this workshop is that it can be recorded and posted online to try several times as well as it offers the opportunity for those who wish to participate in this class virtually.
