The Arts and Older Adults

Marcia Walker

Literary

Marcia is an award-winning writer and playwright whose work has been published in journals across Canada and the United States. Before becoming a writer, Marcia was a lawyer and before that, an actor. She understands how many lives can be folded into one. That is part of the reason why she enjoys working creatively with older adults. For the past eight years, she has taught fiction and memoir, using prompts, poetry, visual art, and photography. Through fun and creative games, she helps participants explore their unique way of seeing the world.

Sample workshop:

Mapping Your Life Stories

Every life is filled with enriching and compelling stories. This is the chance to put those stories on paper and share them with your family and friends, or simply keep them for yourself.

In a nourishing and supportive environment, participants will be guided through an exercise on mapping their childhood neighbourhoods. This fun exercise gives each participant an opportunity to create a map that only they could draw. Through exploring these streets, homes, and back alleys, a host of stories can be unlocked. Participants will share memories, begin to shape life stories, and share their distinct voice on paper.
