My approach to working with older adults comes from the desire to share my practice with others, but more so to share quality art education equitably! Many barriers for vulnerable populations, like older adults, prevent individuals from accessing professional-led learning. I believe that quality art education is for everyone, and everyone deserves to be allowed to learn and belong in the art community, no matter one’s age or demographic. I have found it a joy to watch older adult participants grow and learn as artists when given the tools to do so in an accessible and safe learning space!

Sample workshop:

Linocut Stamp making workshop: (1.5 hrs up to 3 hrs for more complexity)

Linocut stamp-making is based on printmaking through the carving of linoleum sheets to create intricate designs that can be transferred many times on paper. In this workshop, we will use an easy-to-carve, soft rubber to make stamps of fauna and flora, or you can create your own design! You will learn the basics of how to use carving tools, as well as the basics in drawing in order to create a reproducible piece. No experience required!

Materials:

Depending on the size of the group, I can provide some materials to share. However, each participant will need 1-2easy-cut stamping blocks, 1-2 carving tools (can be shared between participants), tracing paper, scrap paper, pencil, transfer paper, a roller or two, ink and small cardstock for the final piece.

Land Acknowledgement

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
