Production Support – Section 3: Selective Aid for Medium- and Feature-Length Documentaries – Unique Works

DESCRIPTION

This section of the program encourages the production of original and engaging medium- and feature-length documentaries from diverse genres and with the potential to be influential both in Quebec and abroad.

CRITERIA

  • Applications must be submitted before the first day of filming
  • The company and producer must have produced and exhibited at least one medium length work (if the application is for a medium length project), several medium length works or one feature-length documentary (if the application is for a feature-length project) in a professional context in Quebec during the previous eight years
  • The director must have directed at least one documentary that was exhibited in Quebec however, SODEC does reserve the right to consider other career paths when determining the project’s eligibility
  • The company must have obtained one of the following prior to submitting an application:
    • An agreement with an eligible broadcaster
    • An agreement with a licensed Quebec distribution company to distribute the documentary in Quebec
    • An agreement with an eligible digital distribution platform that allows the applicant to obtain a refundable tax credit for film and television in Quebec
  • Applications must be accompanied by a operating strategy that takes into account the range of tools available, both digital and conventional
  • For any productions where the original language is other than French, SODEC requires that French dubbing or subtitling of the film be accounted for in the production budget for the purposes of the mandatory exhibition of the French version in Quebec; French dubbing of the film must be provided by a company located in Quebec
  • For co-productions with the NFB, in the eventuality that the NFB wishes to acquire distribution rights of the production, the rights transferred to the NFB must be the subject of a separate agreement, to SODEC’s satisfaction
  • Specific criteria for projects in postproduction:
    • In addition to the general criteria of this section of the program, applications must be submitted after filming has been completed and before the final cut of the production
    • An application for postproduction support can only be submitted once per project, regardless of the number of refusals in the production phase

    • A description of activities and primary achievements

    • Copies of the governing documents, certificate of constitution, articles of incorporation, declaration of registration, certificate of amendment and shareholders agreement (if applicable)
    • Information on shareholders/directors
    • Organizational structures for the applicant company and, if applicable, any affiliated companies
    • Curriculum vitae of the applicant company’s executives
    • Financial statements
  • Applications for projects in postproduction must also include:
    • A rough cut of the film
    • A note from the director indicating the visual and audio work still to be completed
    • A detailed and up-to-date cost report
