DESCRIPTION

Support Organizations is part of the Supporting Artistic Practice program. It provides multi-year funding to Canadian arts organizations that reinforce Canadian art practice through a range of targeted activities and services, including those that bolster the creative and professional capacities of artists and arts workers.

If your organization currently receives core support from this funding opportunity, you will have access to apply.

New applicants:

If your organization currently receives core support from a different program, or you are applying for core funding for the first time and want to apply to Support Organizations, you must contact a program officer well in advance to confirm eligibility before you will be given access to apply.

New applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • have received 1 composite grant or 3 project grants from the Canada Council in the last 5 years. This excludes grants from the following components and programs: Travel, Translation, Literary Publishing Projects, Small-Scale Activities, Micro-grants, Digital Strategy Fund, Creation Accelerator, Frankfurt initiatives, Digital Originals, Digital Now, the COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund, Grow Stage 1, Digital Generator 1, Digital Generator 2, Digital Greenhouse, Seed, and the Canada-Korea Connections Fund. 
  • be a registered or incorporated arts organization
  • work with professional employees
  • have at least 5 years of continuous activities and services that support professional arts practice
  • have had total revenues exceeding $50,000 in each of the last 3 fiscal years

 

Eligible Activities

Organizations can apply for a grant for their primary support activities and services that directly benefit professional artists, arts workers or arts organizations, and that provide:

  • targeted resources and opportunities for the development of a particular artistic practice, groups of artists, arts workers or arts organizations
  • professional spaces for artists to conduct research, produce and share their work
  • ongoing member-based services and opportunities for artists, arts workers or arts organizations
  • published magazines about contemporary arts and the arts sector
  • representation or management services for Canadian artists, groups or organizations
  • maintenance and distribution of Canadian collections of independent media artworks for the public
  • opportunities for mentoring or professional development for artists and arts workers, network building and advancing artistic practice

Ineligible activities: 

  • publishing literary books
  • publishing creative writing magazines
  • activities that focus on the creation or presentation of artistic works
  • activities that receive funding from another Canada Council program or those on the general list of ineligible activities

Support material required for this application

  • A completed Appendix document
  • A deficit reduction plan, if applicable
    • This is required if you answered “Yes” in the Finances section.
  • At least 1 item of support material that demonstrates the relevance and impact of the organization for your sector (not samples of artists’ work)
  • A copy of your organization’s anti-harassment policy
  • The policy must show that your organization has appropriate policies in place to ensure a respectful workplace.
  • If your organization does not currently have an anti-harassment policy, you can consult the Respectful Workplaces in the Arts initiative, which has helpful tools and resources.
  • You can find a template for developing an anti-harassment policy on the Canadian Human Rights Commission website.

Magazine publishers must also provide:

  • PDF copies of (or a document with hyperlinks to) a sampling of issues published during your last cycle
  • a list of writers and contributors published during your last cycle
  • a list of writers and contributors you plan to publish in the years covered by this application

Agents and managers must also provide:

  • a roster of your clients, including the number of years they have been on the roster

Media arts distribution centres must also provide:

  • a list of works you have acquired and placed in distribution during the last funding cycle

Land Acknowledgement

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
