Production Support – Section 1: Selective Aid for Feature-Length Fiction Film Production

DESCRIPTION

This section of the program encourages the production of original and engaging feature-length fiction films from diverse genres that have the potential to be influential both in Quebec and abroad.

CRITERIA

• Available financial aid represents:

65% of the Quebec-based budget for feature-length fiction productions with a total budget of less than $2.5 million

65% of the Quebec-based budget for feature-length fiction productions for feature-length fiction productions with a total budget of $2.5 million or more, up to $4 million (excluding minority co-productions)

65% of the Quebec-based budget for feature-length fiction minority co-productions, up to $350,000

• This section of the program is open to Quebec production companies that produce feature-length fiction and that are judged by SODEC to possess adequate expertise • First-time applicants must contact SODEC at least one month before the submission deadline to determine their eligibility otherwise they will not be considered • Production companies with experience in a specific production format that are submitting a project in another format must contact SODEC at least one month before the submission deadline to determine their eligibility • Fees and salaries for which payment is deferred are subject to written agreements and generally cannot exceed 20% of the total production budget • A single company, including related companies, can apply for one feature-length fiction project per submission deadline, regardless of budget, or two projects if at least one of them is written or co-written by a female screenwriter or director • The producer as well as the director of a project must possess the relevant experience in line with the characteristics of the project being submitted and its budget • Applications must be accompanied by a operating strategy that takes into account the range of tools available, both digital and conventional • Applications must be submitted before the first day of filming • The company and the producer must have screened at least one feature-length fiction production, or any other audiovisual fiction work with an equivalent budget deemed relevant by SODEC, in a professional context in Quebec during the previous eight years • The director must have completed a feature-length fiction production exhibited in Quebec or any other audiovisual fiction work deemed relevant and with an equivalent budget; however, SODEC does reserve the right to consider other career paths of a director when determining the project’s eligibility • Other specific criteria vary according to the nature of the project and its budget (see documentation) • Eligibility for release on CAVCO-recognized broadcast platforms for fiction feature films whose theatrical release has been cancelled but cannot be rescheduled • If selected for the second round of evaluation, a meeting will be arranged with the distributor for each project with a total production estimate of $2.5M or more to provide an opportunity to discuss the project’s promotion and distribution assistance program and marketing strategy (examples of questions and issues to be addressed are available in the Operating Strategy and Preliminary Estimates form)
