Short-Term Projects

DESCRIPTION

Short-Term Projects is part of the Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples program. It funds First Nations, Inuit and Métis professional and emerging artists, cultural carriers, arts and cultural professionals, groups, collectives and organizations working in all disciplines. Grants provide support for any combination of eligible Creating, Knowing and Sharing activities for projects lasting up to 1 year.

CRITERIA

Potential applicants:

  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis artists or arts/cultural workers
  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis cultural carriers
  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis emerging artists
  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis groups or collectives
  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis not-for-profit organizations
  • First Nations, Inuit or Métis for-profit organizations

Organizations receiving core grants can only apply for strategic or exceptional activities not included in their core application and must have prior written approval from the program director.

Activities must be led by eligible First Nations, Inuit or Métis artists, cultural carriers or arts and cultural professionals. Activities may include participation of, or collaboration with, non-Indigenous artists.

You can apply for any combination of eligible Creating, Knowing and Sharing activities lasting up to 12 months, including but not limited to:

  • Creating – research; creation; production; critical discourse (including research or writing); residencies; collaborations
  • Knowing – mentorships; artistic training; community-based initiatives to engage young people through artistic practices; language preservation through artistic practices; intergenerational transmission of artistic knowledge; preservation of traditional knowledge through artistic practice; development of administrative, artistic, cultural or organizational capacity; research; collaborations
  • Sharing – local, regional, national or international exhibitions; implementation of dissemination strategy and organizational objectives; publishing activities; gathering events involving artistic practices; collaborations; marketing and publicity; presentations, festivals and showcase events; networking events involving artistic practices; outreach activities

Ineligible activities:

  • Fashion modelling
  • Hunting and trapping activities unrelated to your artistic practice
  • Activities solely related to ceremony
  • Book launches held by publishers who receive core grants

If your application covers touring existing work, you must apply under Circulation and Touring.

 

EXPENSES

All expenses related to supporting your activity. These can include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Applicants can include fees to pay themselves for the role they play in the project activities. Enter these amounts on the Artists and Professional Fees, Cultural Participant Fees OR Compensation OR Personal Costs line.
  • Honoraria for Elders and Knowledge Keepers including payments or gifts for individuals as a thank you for their time and knowledge. Enter these expenses on the Honoraria for Elders and Knowledge Keepers line.
  • Equipment purchases required to carry out the project. The portion covered by the Canada Council cannot exceed 15% of your requested grant amount. Enter these expenses on the Equipment Purchase Portion Covered by Canada Council line.
  • Travel expenses including transportation costs, per diems and accommodations. Enter these amounts in the Travel Expenses section.
  • Safety-related expenses to make your project safe for participants, such as supplementary insurance riders, safety gear, on-site specialists, etc. Enter these expenses on the Safety-Related Costs line.
  • Child or dependent care expenses if they are required to complete your activity (excluding regular, ongoing expenses). Enter these expenses on the Childcare/Dependent Care Costs line.
  • Public accessibility expenses can include sign language interpretation and translation, accessibility audits, audio description, costs associated with relaxed performances, personal support workers, captioning, ramp rental, access coordinators, etc. Enter these amounts on the Public Accessibility Costs line.

For applicants currently receiving core funding: Do not include any expenses already covered by your core grant.

Remote Community Allowance

If you live in a geographic location that will add increased or unusual costs to your project, you can request funding from the Remote Community Allowance to cover those costs. For more information and to confirm your eligibility for this funding, contact a program officer.

DOCUMENTS

  • Biographies of the key artistic, cultural and technical participants for your project as applicable
  • Letters of invitation, agreement or confirmation from your key participants, partners, organizations or venues, as applicable
  • If you are an aspiring artist, a letter or email of agreement from your mentor and their biography.
    • These must include as much information as possible about event dates, venues, artists’ fees and other financial contributions.
  • Information about partners or host organizations and communities, as applicable
    • Maximum of 1 page for each partner or host organization/community
  • Samples of your work or activities that are relevant to this application
    • You may include the work of other key artists or partners, or earlier work that provides a context for your application.
