The Arts and Older Adults

Anne Lewis

Visual Arts

I’m an older adult and I find this stage of life so exciting. We can claim our freedom and let go of decades of ingrained restraint. More than ever, we can express ourselves fully. All my life I have been a teaching artist and a journalist (ex CTV News). I love working with seniors because I sense there’s less self-consciousness, less muzzling of our creativity. During the middle years, school, work, family and friends can maybe make us feel we have to conform to expectations, even keep ourselves smaller than necessary. Time to express our true and beautiful essential self.

Sample workshop:

“I AM / WE ARE” playshop
We’ll use childhood photos to remember the beauty and essence of our younger selves, share personal stories and be inspired by them. From this, we’ll make art – spoken, visual or written. We’ll
* identify a goal that our childhood selves would want today,
*become more aware of ourselves as individuals and of the groups we belong to,
*develop ideas towards “I AM/WE ARE” awareness and intention

This activity will benefit you, your families, your sense of legacy.

Materials:
