The Arts and Older Adults

Paola Sterling

Dance

I see each participant as a unique individual with their own physical, emotional, and psychological characteristics, which allows me to offer courses adapted to their needs. I therefore have a holistic approach, while using art as a transformative tool.
I realized the older adults love to have a real connection with people is around them. They love share who they are in this moment and be accepted, included, and enjoy the life as they can do now. I try to bring through the dance what they are needing. In the classes, we laugh, we sing, we share; each person has a important place.

Sample workshop:

We start with a warm-up to connect with the heart (life) and body. We dance some basic steps of different Latin rhythms: merengue, salsa, bachata, cumbia, and more. I teach some words in Spanish to sing the songs when we are dancing.
At the end, we do some stretching exercises and a short meditation to connect with the gratitude.
