Music & Sound

My mission is to employ music as a tool to support connections between people, while using such a connection to create music together that feels meaningful and personal.

Body Music is making music directly with the body, through voice, movement and body percussion. It is an interactive, accessible and creative practice adaptable to people with different degrees of mobility.

I offered workshops among others through Communitas—an organization devoted to former inmates’ reintegration in society—the Carrefour d’éducation populaire of Point Saint Charles, and the group of caregivers Les Allumettes, a creative group of mutual support based on clowning. The specific goal of such workshops was to support a sense of reciprocity and mutual recognition among participants.

Sample workshop:

Body Music is a way of using the body unusual and therefore revelatory of the body potentials. It is an experience animated by the pleasure of movement. Yet through the process participants also encounter the resistances and limits of their body: limits that can be explored and gently pushed. The workshop, favouring non-verbal communication––proceeds in an uninterrupted flow that capture participants by alternating progressive levels of engagement: inviting them to imitate and explore (call&response, circle singing), experiment (variations) and eventually improvise and create (soloing and being protagonist).

The activities on the one hand develope coordination and synchronization, while on the other guide people’s ability to listen and give voice to their experience.

Example:
Body Rhythms – Sequences involving coordination of upper and lower limbs introduced
through a fun game of expression (e.g. repeating the same sequence based on the following words: MINIMAL, FLAMBOYANT, ROBOTIC)
Silent Rhythm – Each participant performs a repetitive silent movement. Another one gives voice to what he/she “hears” by paying close attention to the quality of the movements.
Words&Rhythms – Creating body percussion sequences based on texted written by the participants.
