The Arts and Older Adults

Kayin Queeley

Dance

Although the art form of stepping is mostly targeted to a younger population, the adaptability of the art form makes it accessible to many. There is power in creating music with our bodies at any age. I have seen from working with older adults the sense of pride in mastering a few stomps, claps, chants and doing this in synchronization with others.

Sample workshop:

Step It Up- is an introduction to the art form of stepping. This is not aerobics but a black diaspora dance that involves the creation of beats and rhythms using our hands and feet. Our bodies become the instrument and we make the music in synchronization. The workshop includes dialogue around the history of the art form, our connection to our bodies and reflections on what it feels like to ‘step’.
