The Arts and Older Adults

Rebecca Soulis

Visual Arts

My approach is to introduce the benefits of connecting to nature through art while being sensitive to participants’ level of comfort with art. Art is a vehicle for self expression and older adults tend to have a world of experiences to share. As a child I discovered beauty and wonder when visiting natural settings that shaped my career as a teaching artist. As an adult, I’ve combined my love for connecting to people and to nature by offering nature-based art workshops. These workshops have the benefit of helping participants with relaxation, socialising, improving self-esteem and inspiring playfulness. I believe nature sparks joy in one’s life and we simply need to spend time in nature to discover this joy.

Sample workshop:

Nature Through Art for Adults
Together we will explore the effect our senses have on nature connection and use curiosity to explore one’s artistic ability. First we’ll spend time in a natural setting to awaken creativity. Next we will record what we notice and wonder based on sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. Throughout the workshop we will record what certain aspects of nature remind us of, establishing links between nature and inspiration. Participants will be invited to explore different styles of artistic creation through drawing, painting, printmaking and nature journaling. Together we will build on past skills and establish new ones. We will put on paper what sparks joy for us while interacting with the natural world.
