ELAN announces a new project!
Last winter the Secretariat for Relations with English-speaking Quebecers approached ELAN and six other community organizations (representing heritage, youth, seniors and diversity) about a project idea. Quebec’s English-speaking community is ignored by the French-speaking majority much of the time, but sometimes hits the radar in a negative way. Both of these situations make it a challenge for English-speakers to develop a strong community identity. Seven community groups will partner on the Belonging Project to use story-telling and the power of the arts to give members of the English-speaking community a stronger sense of belonging in Quebec. (We will reveal the official name of the tentatively titled ‘Belonging Project’ next month.) ELAN’s part of the project will be based on influential works of art which will inspire creative responses from contemporary life.
The first phase of the project requires YOUR input. Send us the name a work of art by an English-speaking Quebecois artist that has inspired you, encouraged you, enlightened you or made you feel that someone else shared a piece of your reality. It could be a novel, a film, a play, a dance performance, a song or a painting. The work of art can be ancient or recent. The only criteria is that it made a strong impact on you. Given the challenges we are all facing due to the current global, stories featuring characters confronting and overcoming challenges will resonate particularly strongly with the work we plan to do in phase two.
Send us the following three things:
- Name of the artist.
- Name of the work.
- A statement about why this work is important to you.
Your suggestion will help lay a solid foundation for the project and YOUR name will be entered to win one of five $100 gift certificates. Send your submission to submissions@quebec-elan.org with ‘Belonging Project’ in the subject line.
