ACE Artists.

What do a Haiku Poet, a Blues Musician and a Mosaic Artist have in common? They are all ACE Artists!

The ACE Artist List is a short list of artists who have demonstrated the ability to engage students in learning experiences in, about and through the arts.

In 2016 ELAN developed the ACE Initiative to explore how to support English-speaking Artists in connecting with Communities and Educators across Quebec.

Why? When Artists collaborate with teachers to design learning experiences through the arts, students are able to develop their knowledge and skills in the arts, in personal and interpersonal competencies (i.e. communication and teamwork), and in the subjects being taught (English, math, science, history, ethics, etc.).

Projects developed with artists enable students to explore personal identity and to develop connections with their communities that contribute to wellbeing. Supporting English-speaking youth and community members to make sense of their lived experience contributes to retaining youth in Quebec.

Through ACE, English-speaking artists will be trained to facilitate arts-based learning experiences that meet education goals and strengthen communities.

Meet Our Artists.

Artists on the list were identified based on their skills and experience facilitating transformative arts-based learning experiences with schools and communities. We collaborated with other arts-education initiatives that have developed artists’ capacity, including ArtsSmarts, MASCMikwChiyâm, and the Quebec Writers Federation’s Writers in the Communities Program to develop the ACE Artist list. Some artists are included in the Culture in the Schools Repertoire and are eligible for funding for residencies.

We have heard from educators and community organizers that finding English-speaking artists and the funding to bring them in to remote communities is challenging. We are working to address these barriers to access. If you are looking for an English artist and do not see a name that you recognize on our list, there is a much longer list of artists who do workshops and performances but have not yet had experience in designing collaborative learning through the arts experiences.

Contact us for referrals through our email: ace-initiative@quebec-elan.org.

If you are an artist who would like to be added to this list in the future, we will be adding more artists as we have capacity to coach and train and demand from schools.
