Please note that all attendees MUST register prior to attending this workshop. Due to limited spots, participants who have not registered beforehand will be refused at the door.

This workshop is an overview of independent theatre producing. It covers the fundamentals such as forming a company or ad-hoc collective, creating a project timeline and budget, fundraising, publicity, and everything in between. Questions explored throughout the workshop will include: Why self-produce? What’s the context for the production? What is the desired impact? If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of self-producing or have a project on the horizon, this workshop is for you.

Jen will share tips, tricks and tools that she has accumulated through her years of self-producing experience and will aim to apply her know-how directly to your producing aspirations.

Jenn Quinn

Jen Quinn is a Director, Dramaturge, Curator and Producer who has just started a Graduate Diploma program in Management of Cultural Organizations at HEC Montréal. She holds a BFA from the University of Victoria’s Theatre Department where she studied Directing, Design and Production Management. Hailing from the West Coast, Jen has worked with a number of Victoria based theatre companies, including William Head on Stage, where she taught workshops to inmates of a minimum security prison. Jen has participated in the Director’s Lab North and was a part of the Black Theatre Workshop’s Artist Mentorship Ensemble. For four years, Jen was Head Administrator of Freestanding Room, where she founded, curated and produced the ShortStanding Festival of Short Performances. Her direction for Composite Theatre Co.’s I’m Not Here at SummerWorks earned her an Honourable Mention in the Canadian Stage Award for Direction. Jen’s work with Imago Theatre (first as Artsitic and Administrative Assistant in 2016/17, then as Director of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad in Imago’s Her Side of the Story: Revision to Resist) has played an integral role in Jen’s continued development of an intersectional feminist art practice.

ELAN is an official minority language organization within a country that recognizes two languages as official. ELAN is located in Tiohtià:ke, the original name for Montreal in Kanien’kéha, the language of the Mohawk—also known as Mooniyang, which is the Anishinaabeg name given to the city by the Algonquin. While we are based in this city, our projects have also taken place in many regions across Quebec.

We acknowledge the colonial origin of English and French in Canada, and recognize that both languages benefit from official status throughout the land. The province that we know as Quebec is an amalgamation of the traditional territories of the Innu and Inuit nations, Algonquian nations, as well as the Mohawk nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kanien’kéha and Anishinaabemowin are but two of the original languages of this province; Atikamekw, Cree, Inuktitut, and Innu-aimun are also among the many Indigenous languages spoken across Quebec as majority languages, all well before French and English.

ELAN acknowledges the important work being done by First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to revive the traditional languages of these territories, and their advocacy for the official status of Indigenous languages.
