When the project first launched in 2018, Québec Relations had one primary goal: to improve the flow of information between the ministries and funding bodies of the Government of Quebec and the English-language arts community. Through extensive research and documentation, we worked to help members of the community to better understand the services and funding sources available to them.
Now in its fourth year, the project has grown to encompass two main areas: its continued research phase, where surveys, focus groups and consultations allow us to better understand the community’s needs; and its resource phase, where we turn that research into action to help meet those needs. ELAN est un organisme de langue officielle en situation minoritaire dans un pays qui ne reconnaît que deux langues officielles, soit le français et l’anglais. Nos bureaux se trouvent à Tiohtiá: ke, ancien nom de Montréal en kanien’kehá: ka, langue des Mohawks, et la ville était également connue sous le nom de Mooniyang, nom anishinabe que lui avaient donné les Algonquins. Bien que nous soyons basés dans cette ville, nous avons également réalisé des projets dans plusieurs régions du Québec.
Le kanien’kéha et l’anishinabe ne sont que deux des nombreuses langues autochtones liées à notre province, où l’anglais et le français sont des langues coloniales. La province que nous connaissons sous le nom de Québec est née d’une fusion des territoires traditionnels des nations innue et inuite, des nations algonquiennes et des nations mohawks de la Confédération Haudenosaunee. L’atikamekw, le cri, l’inuktitut et l’innu-aimun font également partie des nombreuses langues autochtones autrefois parlées de manière majoritaire au Québec, et cela bien avant l’arrivée du français et de l’anglais.
Nous aimerions souligner l’important travail accompli par les Premières Nations pour faire revivre les langues traditionnelles liées à ces territoires et pour défendre le statut officiel des langues autochtones au Canada.
